Weekend Wrap Up - a look at this week’s Industry Updates

This past weekend grossed $40.3M. The Q3 total now comes to $1.7B as we inch closer to its end. SVM estimates predict it will reach $1.99B. The year’s total is currently $5.39B.

 

Barbarian brought in double the SVM estimates opening at $10M. The thriller stars Georgina Campbell and It actor Bill Skarsgård who are accidentally double-booked at an Airbnb and realize the home has many more haunting problems that it seems. More than half of the film’s opening weekend crowd was diverse: 25% Latinx/Hispanic, 16% Black and 14% Asian. 74% of the total audience was A18-34. Critics were a fan of the horror giving it a 93% fresh score on the Rotten Tomatoes Tomatometer and moviegoers largely approved of the film was a 74% audience score. 

 

Brahmastra Part One: Shiva finished in second place bringing in $4.4M opening weekend. There was significant social media buzz over the weekend for the action-adventure film with 800M reach over Facebook, Twitter, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok. 71% of its total opening weekend audience was A18-34 and 88% of its opening weekend audience was Asian.

 

Bullet Train stays within the top five grossing films for the sixth weekend in a row. Brad Pitt’s action film grossed $3.2M bringing its gross total to $92.5M.

 

In its 16th weekend in theaters, Top Gun: Maverick finishes within the top five once again. Grossing $3.1M, its gross total is $705.6M. Maverick became the bestselling digital sell-through title after being released on streaming on August 23; Paramount’s CEO called Maverick, “The touchstone embodying the power of the cinematic experience.” It’s important to note that after three months in theaters and now on streaming, Maverick is still in over 3,000 theaters nationwide. 

 

DC League of Super Pets added $2.8M over the weekend. Its gross total is $85.4M.

 

There are a few new wide releases coming next weekend:

The Woman King – Based on true events, this historical epic tells the story of the Kingdom of Dahomey, one of the most powerful states in Africa from the 18th-19th centuries. Starring Viola Davis. $10M estimated opening

 

Pearl – The prequel story to Ti West’s X (2022), Pearl is about a young girl living on her parents’ isolated farm in 1918 who dreams of being a star and she will do just about anything to be one. Starring Mia Goth.

 

Running the Bases – A baseball coach receives the opportunity to be head coach a big high school team, but has moral conflictions when he realizes what the superintendent of the school district wants him to do. Starring Brett Varvel, Gigi Orsillo, Todd Terry and Cameron Arnett. $1M estimated opening.

 

God’s Country – A college professor find two trespassers on her property who continually threaten her and she takes it into her own hands to protect her home. $1M estimated opening

 

We received a first look under the sea at The Little Mermaid coming May 26, 2023.

 

As we get closer to Q4, a second look at Lyle, Lyle Crocodile was released as we see Shawn Mendes showcases his vocals as Lyle. The film hits theaters October 7.

 

A second official trailer for Black Adam was released and gave more background on the plot of the new DC story. Black Adam reaches theaters October 21.
