Two new wide releases helped the box office bring in $73.4M ahead of the holiday weekend.
Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness stays on top in its third weekend in theaters, adding $31.6M to its overall gross which now comes to $342M. The Doctor Strange sequel has already far surpassed the total gross of the first Doctor Strange film, which brought in $232.6M overall.
Downton Abbey: A New Era finished in second place this past weekend. Tallying $16M in the box office, the PBS TV adaptation brought back the older generation as 48% of A New Era’s audience was over the age of 55, proving that all age groups want to get back to theaters. This is far higher than 2021 films that appealed to the older generation including West Side Story’s 26% ages 55+ and No Time to Die’s 36% ages 45+. A New Era’s audience was also 73% female, which is on par with the first Downton Abbey film. Audiences and critics alike were impressed by the film with an 85% fresh score on the Tomatometer and 97% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.
PG animated film The Bad Guys continues to bring families into theaters grossing $6.1M over the weekend. Its total gross now comes to $74.4M.
Sonic the Hedgehog 2 stands strong in the top five for the seventh weekend in a row adding $3.9M to its domestic total. Sonic has now grossed $181M overall.
Psychological thriller Men opened at $3.2M. From the director of Ex Machina, the film stars Jessie Buckley as Harper, a woman who is mourning the death of her ex-husband and finds herself being stalked while on vacation in the English countryside.
Next weekend brings the long-awaited Top Gun: Maverick. After 36 years, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell is back. New Top Gun graduates are about to go on a special mission and Maverick is the only one who can prepare them for what comes next. The film is set to impress audiences as it already received a five-minute standing ovation at the Cannes Film Festival.
The Bob’s Burgers Movie will also open on May 27. The film follows the Belcher family as they try to save the family business after a water main break creates a sinkhole in front of the restaurant while the kids try to solve a mystery that could also compromise the business.
