Weekend Wrap Up - a look at this week’s Industry Updates

PG films have once again dominated the weekend box office. Overall, the box office brought in $65.6M, helping the quarterly total reach over $500M with a total tally of $586.2M.

 

The Bad Guys is still leading the box office, proving families have returned to theaters. The PG animated film brought in $16.1M over the weekend, only a -32.8% drop from its opening frame. Its gross total now comes to $44.4M.

 

Sonic the Hedgehog 2 remains in second place grossing $11.3M. Its total gross domestically has not grossed over $150M, now sitting at $160.9M after just four weeks in theaters.

 

Harry Potter prequel series Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore added $8.3M over the weekend. Its total gross is now $79.5M.

 

Viking epic The Northman starring Aleksander Skarsgard comes in fourth place this weekend bringing in $6.3M, making its total gross $22.8M.

 

In its fourth week, Everything Everywhere All At Once starring Michelle Yeoh jumps up +2.2% after being added to 80 theaters this past weekend. Its total gross is now $35.4M after adding $5.5M over the weekend.

Memory starring Liam Neeson was the only new wide release this weekend. Finishing in eighth place, the action-packed film opened at $3.1M.

 

This past week has been jam-packed with exciting movie news announced at CinemaCon. Each studio announced new projects, released trailers, and gave sneak peeks of what is to come. Here are some important highlights below:

    • Revealed more footage of Jurassic World: Dominion complete with clips of the resurrected original cast. Jeff Goldblum supported with an in-person appearance who said, “Going to the movie theaters, they’ve been the most romantic and magical times of my life.”
    • She Said, the film based on the book expose about the #MeToo movement, had its trailer drop.
    • Inside look into Jordan Peele’s Nope, Halloween Kills starring Jamie Lee Curtis, 2023 film M3GAN, Beast starring Idris Elba, Easter Sunday starring Jo Koy, and new trailers for Minions: The Rise of Gru, Ticket to Paradise, Bros, Puss in Boots: The Last Wish and The Voyage of the Last Demeter.
  • Focus Features
  • Disney
    • The second Avatar film coming this December has an official title: Avatar: The Way of Water. The trailer for Avatar will run in theaters before Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in its first week of release starting May 6.
  • Lionsgate
    • The studio revealed more details about films John Wick 4, Expendables 4, About My Father, Are You There God? It’s Me Margaret starring Rachel McAdams,Borderlands and a new Hunger Games film Hunger Games Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes due November 2023.

Next weekend brings Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness starring Benedict Cumberbatch. Advance ticket sale tickets have already soared bringing in $42M.
