The box office grossed $123.9M over the weekend, bringing the Q3 total shy of the $1B mark at $965.4M. If the box office reaches $1B before the end of the month, it will be the first time the box office has brought in $1B in one month since December 2019.
Nope opened at $44M making it the highest opening weekend for an original movie since Jordan Peele’s Us (2019). The horror is the third feature from Jordan Peele and scored 83% fresh on the Tomatometer and received a 71% audience score in Rotten Tomatoes. The audience was young and diverse as 68% of the crowd were ages 18-34 and 33% Black, 20% Hispanic/Latinx, and 8% Asian.
Thor: Love and Thunder brought in $22.1M during its third weekend in theaters. Its gross total now comes to $276.2M. Love and Thunder’s weekend box office totals are trending slightly higher than Thor: Ragnarok, which did $21.7M in its third weekend. Once Love and Thunder crosses the $300M mark, it will become the 18th MCU film to reach that milestone.
Minions: The Rise of Gru tallied $17.7M during its fourth weekend in theaters. Its total gross is just under $300M sitting at $297.8M. This is a higher tally than Minions (2015), which was at $288M at this point of its release.
Where the Crawdads Sing remains in the top five grossing films for its second weekend in theater. The New York Times bestselling book adaptation tallied $10.3M at the box office, bringing its gross total to $38.3M.
Top Gun: Maverick is not far behind in the fifth-place spot bringing in $10M. It remains the highest grossing film of the year thus far now with a total gross of $635.5M. Maverick has become the ninth highest grossing film of all time and isn’t slowing down any time soon. It has the chance to oust Jurassic World (2015) from the eighth-place spot whose total is $653.4M.

Next weekend brings DC League of Super Pets, the star-studded animated comedy about Superhero’s dog, Krypto, and his best friends who learn to master their own superpowers to fight crime. The film stars Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Vanessa Bayer, John Krasinski, Kate McKinnon and Keanu Reeves.
The second wide release this weekend is Vengeance, which is the theatrical directorial debut for The Office’s BJ Novak. The film follows a journalist (Novak) who learns of the death of a girl he was involved with and feels obligated to find out what really happened to her. Vengeance also stars Ashton Kutcher, Dove Cameron, Boyd Holbrook and Issa Rae.
