Weekend Wrap Up - a look at this week’s Industry Updates

The first week of the Q3 box office has started off strong with the huge $100M+ releases of Minions: The Rise of Gru and Thor: Love and Thunder. This marks the first time since 2018 that there were $100M+ openings back-to-back weekends. This weekend’s total gross finished at $235.8M, which is the highest grossing weekend of the year so far. Q3 is off to a great start, already hitting $537M.


Thor: Love and Thunder took the box office by storm with a huge $143M opening weekend making it the biggest opening out of all of the Thor franchise films. The audience was 53% A18-34 and had over 10M admissions. Its audience was diverse as Hispanic/Latinx moviegoers made up almost a third of the opening weekend crowd and Asians made up 13% of the audience. It received a B+ CinemaScore and was 68% fresh and an 81% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes.

 

Minions: The Rise of Gru sits in second place in its second weekend in theaters. Gru and his yellow minions brought in $45.6M, making its gross total hit over $200M. The film tallies $210M thus far.

In its seventh week in theaters, Top Gun: Maverick stays in a comfortable spot in the top five grossing films bringing in $15.5M. Still the highest grossing film of the year so far, it is dangerously close to hitting the $600M mark. Its current total gross is $597.4M.


Elvis remains a fan favorite tallying $11M over the weekend making its total gross $91M after three weeks in theaters. There is already some Oscar buzz around Austin Butler’s performance as the King of Rock ‘n’ Roll.


Jurassic World: Dominion is coming closer to ousting The Batman as the fourth highest grossing film of the year thus far. Dominion brought in $8.4Mover the weekend bringing its gross total to $350.3M.


Next weekend brings New York Times bestselling book adaptation Where the Crawdads Sing, animated film Marcel the Shell With Shoes On, and animated comedy Paws of Fury: Legend of Hank.


Where the Crawdads Sing – Set during the 1950s and 1960s, a young woman named Kya from the secluded marshes of North Carolina becomes a person of interest in the murder of a man she was once involved with. Starring Daisy Edgar Jones, Taylor John Smith and Harris Dickinson.  

 

Marcel the Shell With Shoes On – Based on the 2010 stop motion animation short film, this mockumentary comedy is about the adventures of a mollusk named Marcel. Voiced by Jenny Slate, Dean Fleischer-Camp, and Isabella Rossellini.

Paws of Fury: Legend of Hank – A dog named Hank decides his destiny is to become a samurai and seeks out help to achieve his goal. Voiced by Michael Cera, Ricky Gervais, George Takei, Gabriel Iglesias, Mel Brooks, Michelle Yeoh, and Samuel L. Jackson.

Starring Margot Robbie, Christian Bale, John David Washington, Chris Rock, Anya Taylor-Joy, Taylor Swift, Rami Malek, Zoe Saldana and Robert DeNiro. Coming November 4, 2022
