Weekend Wrap Up - a look at this week’s Industry Updates

Over the long weekend, audiences came out to theaters once again for Tom Holland, who starred in the newly released Uncharted. Other wide film openings were drama starring Channing Tatum,Dog and horror film The Cursed.

 

Uncharted opened at $43.8M totaling $51M after the holiday weekend, proving that the Tom Holland hype from Spider-Man is not over. Based on the popular Uncharted video games, this live-action film tells the story of how treasure hunter Victor “Sully” Sullivan (Mark Wahlberg) recruits pick-pocketer Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) to be his protégé. Fortnite created two avatars based on characters in Uncharted, modeling the avatars after the actors’ wardrobes in the film. This prequel to the video games earned a very high $11,929 per screen average.

 

Dog, a film about army ranger Jackson Briggs (Channing Tatum) and his late friend’s dog travelling on a long journey to attend his friend’s funeral, opened at $18M. This is Tatum’s directorial debut and is loosely based on his late dog Lulu, who he took on a road trip when she was sick.

 

Spider-Man: No Way Home continues to make history, even after 10 weeks in theaters. The film has officially become the third highest grossing movie of all time, pushing Avatar to the fourth spot.Spider-Man has now grossed $771.4M after grossing $8.5M this past weekend.

 

In its second week of release, Death on the Nile earned $7.5M bringing its gross total to $26.2M. It stands strong with audiences with an 82% Rotten Tomatoes audience score.

 

Jackass Forever grossed $6.15M over the long weekend, proving that the franchise finale has been a success. Its total gross is now $47.6M. The comedy has become an audience favorite with a 92% Rotten Tomatoes audience score and 86% fresh on the Tomatometer.

 

The Cursed, which originally premiered at the 2021 Sundance Film Festival, opened at $2M. Set during the 1800s, supernatural beings haunt the rural French countryside and pathologist John McBride (Boyd Holbrook) explores what could be haunting the town.

 

This weekend, the opening of the Foo Fighters biopic Studio 666 will tell the story of the ups and downs of the band’s illustrious career. In preparation for the upcoming film, Foo Fighters streamed a Super Bowl after-show performance which was their first ever VR experience, and released a new line of merchandise with the film’s artwork including t-shirts, mugs, blankets and more.

 

In other movie news, Encanto headed back to theaters because of its success on Disney+ after its original theatrical debut. The film grossed $95M domestically after opening on November 24, 2021 and was nominated for three Academy Awards including Best Animated Feature, Best Original Score and Best Song for “Dos Oruguitas”. Last year’s third highest grossing film, Venom: Let There Be Carnage, also went back to theaters in January due to popular demand and has now grossed $213.5M domestically.
