Weekend Wrap Up - a look at this week’s Industry Updates

This past weekend brought in $36.5M increasing the fourth quarter total to $1.2B. With just 3 weeks left in 2022, the box office is nearing the $7B mark, now at $6.8B.

 

Black Panther: Wakanda Forever leads the way for the fifth weekend in a row grossing $11.1M. Its gross total is now $409.8M, the third film of the year to reach the $400M milestone. Wakanda Forever is now the third highest grossing film of 2022 and is set to oust Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness in the second-place spot within the next few days. Top Gun: Maverick remains the #1 film of the year.

 

Violent Night finished in second place for the second weekend in a row. The action-packed holiday film grossed $8.6M, which is a drop of only -35.3% from its opening frame. The film’s total gross is now $26.6M.

 

Strange World grossed $3.6M in its third weekend in theaters. The animated film’s total gross is now $30.4M.

 

In its fourth weekend in theaters, thriller The Menu grossed $2.7M. Its total gross is now $29M.

 

Devotion closes out the top five grossing films of the weekend bringing in $2M. After three weekends in theaters, the Korean War based film has now brought in $16.9M.

 

This weekend the long-awaited Avatar: The Way of Water opens. There is already rave reviews about the film and its impressive CGI, but the film is receiving critical acclaim with the announcement of the 2023 Golden Globe nominationsThe Way of Water has received nominations for Best Motion Picture in the Drama category and Avatar director James Cameron received a nomination for Best Director in a Motion Picture. Screenvision’s estimated opening for the film is $200M.

 

A second trailer for M3GAN reveals more plot details about the very realistic programmed doll. Then trailer shows what lengths the doll will go to to protect her human companion, Cady. Starring Allison Williams, Violet McGraw and Amie Donald. Coming January 6, 2023. Estimated opening $12M

 

An official trailer for comedy Champions was released. When a successful minor league basketball coach gets in trouble, his community service is to help a team try to reach the Special Olympics. Starring Woody Harrelson, Ernie Hudson and Madison Tevlin. Coming March 24, 2023. Estimated opening $5M
