Weekend Wrap Up - a look at this week’s Industry Updates

The box office grossed $96.9M over the weekend with two new wide releases in DC League of Super Pets and Vengeance. The Q3 gross total comes to $1.13B, which is the first time since December 2019 that a month grossed over $1B.

 

DC League of Super Pets flew into the first-place spot during its opening weekend bringing in $23M. The star-studded voiceover cast of Dwayne Johnson, Kevin Hart, Kate McKinnon, John Krasinski, Vanessa Bayer and Keanu Reeves impressed with a 72% Tomatometer score and an 88% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The audience skewed young as 73% were under 35 years of age and 29% of the moviegoers were between the ages of 25 and 34. Super Pets moviegoers were also diverse: 26% Hispanic/Latinx, 14% Asian and 11% Black.

 

Nope grossed $18.5M and dropped -58% during its second weekend in theaters, which is on par with horror films that have a typical drop of -60%. Its first 10 days in theaters totals $80.5M.

 

Thor: Love and Thunder has hit the $300M mark, making it the sixth film of 2022 to hit that milestone. After a $13.1M weekend in its fourth week in theaters, its total gross is $301.5M.

 

Minions: The Rise of Gru has also zoomed past the $300M mark during the week last week and it was the fifth film of the year to do so. After this weekend’s $10.8M gross, its total now comes to $320.4M making it the fifth highest grossing film of 2022.

 

Top: Gun Maverick has remained in the top five grossing films since its opening 10 weekends ago. This past weekend Top Gun hit the $650M mark now sitting at $650.1M after bringing in $8.2MMaverick is still the ninth highest grossing film of all time domestically, but still climbing the ranks. The film is just $3.3M away from soaring into eighth place past Jurassic World (2015) and $9.2M away from seventh place Titanic (1997).

 

Next weekend brings Bullet Train, an action-packed adventure starring Brad Pitt, Joey King, Zazie Beetz, Sandra Bullock, Brian Tyree Henry, and Hiroyuki Sanada. The film follows five assassins on a train in Japan, all realizing they are there for one common purpose.

 

Easter Sunday also opens this weekend and stars comedian Jo Koy. The film is based on his life and experiences as his family gathers together to celebrate Easter.

Bodies Bodies Bodies arrives in theaters this weekend. The comedic horror follows a group of friends who are staying together in a mansion and their games turn deadly quickly. Starring Amandla Stenberg, Pete Davidson, Maria Bakalova, Rachel Sennott and Chase Sui Wonders.
