Three new wide releases that have been rated highly by both critics and audiences alike helped the box office reach $92.6M this past weekend.
The PG films have taken over the box office with the opening of The Bad Guys, an animated comedy about a group of criminal animals. The A-List cast of voice actors include Sam Rockwell, Marc Maron, Awkwafina, Craig Robinson and Anthony Ramos. The Bad Guys brought in $24M. The film also received an 86% fresh score from critics on the Tomatometer and 93% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. With admissions at 2.1M, it is evident that theatrical releases are worth more than straight to streaming movies. Families made up the audience; 56% were females, 62% were moms and 27% were under the age of 25. 25% of the audience was Hispanic and Latino and 20% were African American/Black.
Not far behind is Sonic the Hedgehog 2, which continues to fare well with audiences bringing in another $15.2M over the weekend. Its gross total now comes to $145.8M.
Fantastic Beasts: The Secrets of Dumbledore leads the way for the second weekend in a row. The third installment in the Harry Potter prequel story brought in $14M, bringing its gross total to $67.1M.
Viking film The Northman also opened this weekend bringing in a surprising $12M. Starring Alexander Skarsgård, the film is about a Viking seeking revenge for the death of his father. It was also highly rated by viewers with an 89% fresh score from critics and 67% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. The film’s audience also drew in the younger crowd: 61% were ages 18-34 and 68% were male. In terms of ethnicity, 21% were Hispanic and Latino, 13% were Asian/other and 10% were African American/Black.
The Unbearable Weight of Massive Talent stars Nicolas Cage as himself, who doubles as a CIA agent when making a paid appearance at his superfan’s private party – who is seemingly a drug kingpin. The film opened at $7.1M over the weekend and has received rave reviews from critics and moviegoers alike with an 88% fresh score on the Tomatometer and 87% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes. Unbearable Weight also drew in a younger audience with 57% between the ages of 18 and 34 and 59% were male.
Next weekend brings Memory starring Liam Neeson. Expert assassin Alex Lewis (Neeson) is caught in a moral dilemma not wanting to do a job for a dangerous organization, but his other challenge comes when his memory begins to waver too.
